When you get the ticket that we got, you also get to walk up another floor and literally walk on the roof of the cathedral. But compared to the first floor and stop where you get to take a lift to get up there, you have to walk up some stairs to get to the highest roof and floor yourself. That’s where my fear of heights really kicked in and stopped me, because the stairs is the same kind of architecture design as the rest of the cathedral so there’s holes on the side of the stairs and you can look out at the side over Piazza del Duomo, and I did the mistake of doing that and the higher up we walked the more I realised how high up we were, and after walking almost halfway up the stairs I just stopped and couldn’t force myself to walk any further. I assumed that we also had to walk down another pair of stairs to get down again and that would make me realise even more how high up we were. So after panicking and standing still for a bit in the stairs, I had to turn around and walk back down to sit down, and then I took the lift down again to meet my cousin who did go up on the top of the cathedral. Since my cousin did go up there, we found out that you then come down right inside the cathedral, while I had to queue again outside to get inside. The woman in the lift must have seen how panicked I was even if I was wearing sunglasses because she immediately asked me if I was okay, which was nice of her.

 

If you’re also scared of heights, keep this in mind and only do what you’re comfortable with. Maybe you would be smart enough to not even go up in the cathedral in the first place, but if you want to, I would say that the first stop and floor is doable if you don’t go close to the edges and don’t look down too much, but I would probably not recommend anyone who is scared of heights to walk up to the second stop and top roof, even if the view up there must be amazing and you could probably take beautiful photos up there.
