Day Of The Girl: End Child Marriage!

Today on October 11, 2012, is the International Day Of The Girl. ♥

I'm doing this blog-post to help raise awareness about girls and childmarriage.
Did you know that 25,000 girls become child brides every day? I think this is terrible and it really breaks my heart to think about it and that's why I want to inform people about this and hopefully everyone else will do the same so we can stop this once and for all.

Child marriage robs 10 million girls a year of their childhood. A harmful traditional practice, child marriage denies girls their rights to health, education and security.

Great change can happen within a single generation. I know this to be true.
− Desmond Tutu.

In this new video from Girls Not Brides, Graça Machel, Mary Robinson and Desmond Tutu of The Elders call on people around the world to action: to end child marriage in a single generation.❞

FACTS:
• If we do nothing, 100 million girls will become childbrides in the next decade.
• Girls under 15 are 5 times more likely to die in childbirth than women in their 20s.
• The children of childbrides are 60% more likely to die in their 1st year of life than children born to mothers over 19.
• Childmarriage denies girls the educational & economic opportunities to help lift her & her family out of poverty.
• 1 in 3 girls in the developing world is married before 18; 1 in 7 girls is married before the age of 15.
